Paper Domes

Step-by-Step directions for building your own paper dome

Read ALL of the directions BEFORE beginning project

  1. Acquire Materials

  • Paper/note cards, white/colored

  • Paper brads, 1"-2" in length

  • Good quality scissors

  • Single hole punch - Small or Regular

  • Desktop tape dispenser with extra rolls

  • Dowel (optional, for rolling thicker struts)

  1. Roll all the struts

  • Determine Size of Dome

  • 1 foot or smaller, note cards will work

  • Larger than a foot, use large note cards or paper

  • Roll diagonally so opposite corners of paper determine max strut length

  • Use enough tape to seal the strut with a full wrap around

  • Add an extra piece closer to center of strut for added strength

  • Repeat and store neatly, keeping the same orientation throughout (taped side consistently lined up)

  1. Finish the Struts

  • Frequency - 1V, 2V, 3V, 4V, 5V, or 6V

  • If you are using 4V or higher, make sure you organize/color code/mark the struts accurately

  • Increase in frequency will increase size and complexity

  • See table below for formula and calculating strut length

  • Carefully mark all struts, being sure not to draw across edge of paper (you'll know why once you start punching holes)

  • Double check all measurements

  1. Build Your Dome!

  • Lay out all pieces in a flat dome pattern (see below)

  • Attach pieces together with paper brad, stacking them tightly together

  • Start from the center/top and work in clockwise manner

  • Once finished, reorganize the stacks for each brad to a more appealing pattern of your choice (see below)

  • Tape the ends of the brads to opposite struts of each hub for permanent structure

  • Use your dome to decorate your home, affix to light fixtures, or wrap in cellophane to use as a mold, and MORE!
